JONES

The notes on your camera angles and shots look great Harry. Also some good work displayed through the storyboard. I'm looking forward to seeing your refined version of the storyboard pulling all the details together.

Don't forget to be thinking and documenting how you are applying the theories - are you challenging them or confirming to them? Look back at Mr Plumtree's post for more details.

Ideas for shots and basic plan for the music video

This is a basic first draft of a plan for my music video with the different shots that I am planning to use and ideas that I might want to use for the video. The next step will be for me to create a basic story board.

Experimentation with stopmotion and timelapse

This is a test shot of a time-lapse shot at 1 frame every 30 seconds and played back. This has allowed me to see the speed of the time-lapse that I will want to use to get the results I want.

This is a video made with stop motion animation there is 9 individual frames that I then reversed and copied to extend the length of the video. This is a technique that I want to use within my video however I still need to look at lip-syncing with this filming technique.

Plumtree

Harry, well done for getting all the posts in place and it is good to see the style of your chosen band in their previous videos. It does set you a challenge though as to how conceptual you can make yours!
You also need to think about how the theoretical aspects might impact on your video and and where you might conform or challenge these theories.

Andrew Goodwin - Music video theories

Andrew Goodwin devised 6 key aspects for a music video to be successful these are:
  • Genre Characteristics - Music videos of different genre display different characteristics of that genre to help the audience know what genre of music they are listening to. Examples of these genre characteristics include:
      • Stage performance in a heavy metal music video
      • Dance routines are very popular with more mainstream pop music artists
      • Flashy cars and bikini clad women are synonymous with rap music video
  • A relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals - this relationship can be complimentary or contrasting it just depends on the effect that the is trying to get across in his videos:

For example in Peter Gabriel's - Sledgehammer a sledgehammer appears during the
the video just before the word sledgehammer appears in the song thus linking the video
with the song its self

  • A relationship between the music and the visuals - This is often done in the form of the instruments appearing in the video and playing the song thus grounding the performance in the world that the video creates and further linking the visuals to the song.

In this example from Olly Murs - Heart Skips a Beat ft. Chiddy Bang the keyboard being played is not the
main focus of the video however still being there increases the relationship between the song and the video.

  • The demands of the record label - This can occur in all sorts of ways like:
    • lots of close-ups of the artist
    • A distinct visual style for example:
      • Lady Gaga's insane outfit choices
      • Michael Jacksons glove
  • Voyeurism - The notion of looking this can apply to both men and women however it is most prominent with women. This point is expanded upon with Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory which is the idea that the camera is filmed from the perspective of a heterosexual male
  • Another key component of a music video is that they often include intersexual references this is where there are references to other media like films, T.V and sometimes even other music videos.
I will use the key components of music videos from Andrew Goodwin's theory to help develop my music video. However I will not be including voyeurism as it is not related to my chosen song and I believe it would not add anything to my music video.

The three types of music videos

Plumtree

Harry, there are still lots of gaps on your blog. You need to look at your chosen band and their codes and conventions of their videos in the past, thinking about whether you will adhere to them or challenge them. You also need to look at the theoretical aspects and how this might affect your choices, as well as creating a storyboard, cast list, prop list and shooting schedule. So for tomorrow's lesson you will need to have posted the codes and conventions of your chosen artist and their previous videos and then by Friday, you will need to have posted the analysis of the three different types of video and the theoretical analysis of Goodwin and Mulvey.
